How Colours Depict Your Personality and Affect How You Feel

The psychology of colours.  All those with an appreciation of beauty, are aware that colours evoke different emotional responses.  Several ancient cultures, notably the Egyptians and Chinese, have practiced light and colour therapy, chromotherapy, as a holistic or alternative medicinal treatment; each colour devoted to treating different ailments.

  • Red was used to stimulate the body, mind and increase blood circulation.
  • Yellow was believed to stimulate the nerves, improve the lymphatic system and purify the body.
  • Orange was used to heal the lungs and increase energy levels.
  • Blue was thought to soothe inflammation and treat pain.
  • Indigo was thought to improve skin complaints.

Although colours represent varying meanings in other cultures, modern research has found that colour can impact how we feel and influence how we perform.  A favourite and noticeable way of expressing our mood is through the colour of our nails.

Nail polish is a phenomenal statement.  No longer restricted to simply pink, red or coral, women today have a multitude of colours and finishes to make a statement.  Whether sporting a nude tone to synchronize perfectly with skin tone; rocking with metal and shimmers; displaying our playful side with animal prints and patterns, the sky is the limit to our creative expression.  Compared to the price of a statement pair of shoes or handbag, every woman can afford to invest in a few bottles of good quality nail polish, extending her wardrobe with each splash of colour and feeling perfectly pampered every single day!

That said, most of us gravitate to one or two nail categories – whether a smart sophisticated nude with a hint of colour, a dark and mysterious gloss or the latest strobe of crimson red.  Your choice of colour and finish can be very revealing about your personality and inner thoughts.  JACAVA London Education Manager, Sue Collins, shares her thoughts about the different nail looks and the women who love them.  Check these out below.  Did she get it right about your favourite look?

Classic chic dress sense, polished and career-driven, this lady knows precisely what she wants.  Decorous and business-like, she is both respectful of others and expects to receive a respectful audience in return.  Sue says, “This lady prefers nudes as the go-to lacquer, to refresh nails before they appear tired or stale.”  If you reach for the nude nail polish above all else, perhaps you’re a perfectionist – or, says Sue, this choice of shade may be more symbolic: “It’s like discharging an old project or moving on from a breakup with a boyfriend.  It’s a symbolic spring clean or a clean slate from which to start over.”
